- Broken Remnants of Connecticut’s Stone Walls
WordPress weekly photo challenge is “Broken”. I thought this photograph fit the broken theme.
In New England, especially Connecticut, you will find clues of the agricultural past. The evidence comes in the form of stone walls that can be found in the most random areas of Connecticut. These walls were built between the 1600-1800s and they use to go for miles and miles.
Today when they are found they are usually broken and overgrown by nature. These walls are often torn down to build new building sites in the name of progress, but there is a movement that is trying to preserve these rambling stone walls.
While hiking through Brooksvale Park in Hamden, CT we came across the broken stone wall pictured above. Whenever we find one we always love to imagine what the farmer and family was like who built the wall. What did they grow and why did they eventually leave their land to be over grown by nature?
The stone walls are a clue into Connecticut’s past and they makes us happy.

I’ve lived in Connecticut for most of my life and love to spend time walking in the woods. Like you, I often wonder about the family who built each crumbling wall encountered. Very nice picture!
