I have adopted the USA as my country, but I am originally from the Philippines.
When I was growing up a “siesta” (nap in English) was a common practice not only for kids, but adults.
A siesta typically occurs in the early afternoons at around 1:00-3:00 p.m. The nap ranges from a few minutes to a few hours.
The Filipino siesta is a habit that was adapted from the Spaniards who colonized the Philippines for about 300 years.
Often, you will find other former Spanish colonies, like Mexico, that still practice the wonderful restful siesta.
Before I had kids I never felt the need for the afternoon siesta. I remember as a teenager feeling that afternoon napping was so antiquated. Often, I wondered why one would want to sleep when there was so much to experience while being awake? When my parents would go down for their afternoon siestas I felt that they were from a different planet.
Now that I am a stay at home Mom I look at siestas as a welcome treat. If my young ones are down then I sometimes will follow them instead of doing errands and chores.
The siesta is one of the perks of staying home with the kids. I love my job!
